What Is Vitality Vanguard?

What Is Vitality Vanguard?

Why we exist

Somewhere along the way, a version of professional became the only acceptable one. The same blazer, the same handshake, the same flattened way of speaking that reads as safe to people who've never had to prove they belong in the room. Nobody voted on it. Nobody can point to where the standard actually came from, yet almost everyone building something is expected to fold themselves into it anyway, to get funded, to get taken seriously, to get through the door. Vitality Vanguard started from a simpler question than that: who actually set the rule, and why does everyone keep following it. VV exists to showcase people differently, to set the stage for what's actually possible when character is allowed to stay intact, in Melbourne and beyond it, in places like Australia where difference gets quietly cut down before it's had the chance to grow. VV exists to build a class of people who don't have to answer that question, or pretend, anymore.

What Vitality Vanguard actually is

Vitality Vanguard is a magazine. It publishes the people worth paying attention to, and it does it with the same care most people reserve for the work itself. The name carries the whole idea if you slow down enough to read it properly: vitality as energy and vigor, vanguard as the discipline to carry it forward first.

Where the mould came from, and what it costs

This isn't about suits, or dress codes, or professionalism needing to disappear. If anything, VV thinks the world could use more of it, more craft, more discipline, more people who actually finish what they start. The target is narrower: the idea that there's only one acceptable face for it, one register, one walk, one way of holding a room, whether that room is a boardroom, a gallery, a stage, or a pitch deck. The people who've historically held the wealth and the platforms set the aesthetic, because their comfort became the price of entry, and everyone chasing access learned to mirror it back to them.

What gets lost in that trade isn't the wardrobe. It's character. People learn to swap their actual personality for a version that reads as unthreatening, and the trade doesn't always reverse once they've made it. A businessman in a full coat and cane who actually was one. A musician who fully inhabited the part instead of performing a diluted version of it. Some cities have kept more of that alive than others. Plenty of places, including much of the professional and creative world here in Australia, have flattened toward one safe template, and mistaken the flattening for maturity.

What VV is pushing back on

This is the gap VV is trying to hold open. VV isn't against standards, discipline, or doing things properly, it's against the idea that any of those things only come in one face. This isn't an open door for any opinion or persona to walk through. Difference is not the qualification. The work still has to be real.

The world this points toward

Follow the same argument past the room and the door and it stops being about how people present themselves and starts being about what gets built, buildings, transport, technology, fashion, the suburbs, the thousand small decisions nobody notices until they're missing. Walk down most streets and the range on offer is just as narrow as the boardroom, one silhouette of a house, one train line built to move bodies rather than serve people. Somewhere the imagination got rationed down to what's fastest to approve and cheapest to scale, and everyone stopped noticing the rationing.

VV is interested in the other version, a world where stepping outside sparks something rather than numbing it, built with the same integrity and rigour, but with the actual range restored, curiosity and craft treated as the same discipline rather than opposites, livability weighed as seriously as the margin. Not spectacle for its own sake, beauty that still has to hold up structurally, still has to work.

For that world to take root, the people capable of building it need a way through that doesn't run entirely through the rooms that narrowed everything down in the first place. That's where Vitality Vanguard tries to hold space. Platforming the people already doing it differently, before the usual gatekeepers get a say, gives them exposure they'd otherwise have to trade themselves for. VV won't build that world alone. But it can help move the right people closer to a position where they can build it on their own terms, and hold the space until more of them get there.

The people it's for

The thread running through everything VV touches is the same one running through this issue: people who are building something real, on their own terms, without trading their perspective in at the door to be believed. Founders, designers, creatives, the kind of work that rewards a second look precisely because it doesn't look like everything else in the room, and who never fully agreed to the mould in the first place. Vitality Vanguard exists to give that person, and that work, the platform it deserves, with the same care for detail most people rush past. A standard, for a new class.
